Businesses on this site are either added by the Build Black Together (BBT) team, business owners themselves, and by non-business owners who simply know of black-owned businesses. It is completely free to add a black-owned business to our platform. Please look at the "Adding businesses together" section to learn about adding businesses.
There is no catch to this site. BBT does not profit from the consumers or businesses when a new business is added or when a purchase is made from the business (or even at all). BBT was born out of passion, not a desire to profit.
Click the "Find Businesses" button on our Home page or "Directory" link in the top navigation bar to see our directory. Our directory will give you the ability to search and filter for black-owned businesses based on category, location, or BBT ceritification.
Add black-owned businesses:
Click the "Add Businesses" button on our Home page or "Quick Add" in the top navigation bar to a black-owned business.
One of the most exciting aspects of this platform is that ANYONE can add a business instantly and it takes less than 3 minutes on average to do. You don't have to sign up and we don't share your email address with anyone. We genuinely want businesses added so people can have an awesome list of black-owned business options to choose from.
When you add a business, you get an email that serves as a record of the details you've added. If you want make any changes, email us at email@example.com. We will read your request and make the necessary updates on our site to reflect your wishes.
We know anyone can add a business right away, that is one of the biggest benefits of our platform. To combat illegitimate businesses being added, our quality team will review each business and validate them with a BTT Certification. If we review a business and find that it is not legitimate we will remove it from our platform immediately. If you don't see a certification you can still view the businesses but please keep in mind that they have not been reviewed yet.
You: Upon completion, you will get an email notification stating that the business was successfully added to our site
Note: At this point in time, the business you added will be searchable on our platform.
BBT: We will review your submission as quick as possible and validate that the business is black-owned
BBT: We will mark the business as certified on our site
BBT: We will add a screenshot of the website's home page to our site
If the business you added is found to be inaccurate, inappropriate, or illegitimate, we will temporarily remove the business from our site, reach out to you for clarification, and after our review we will determine if the business will be reinstated.
What to expect when BBT adds a business:
When we add a black-owned business to our directory ourselves, we follow this process:
Visit the business's website to understand the product/service offerings. Based on what we find in their site, we tag the business with those categories in our directory.
Add the "About" section or equivalent from the website to the BBT business description section. In other words, when you read a description on our BBT site about a business, that description came from their website or a major news source they were featured in, if no "About" information is available on their site.
Search for the sites primary location and locations the company can service their customers. For example: If a company is headquarted in San Francisco, Californa, has the ability to make sales online, and ships to all US states, we would set the location on our site to - "Online, California, Nation-wide".
We then take a screenshot of the website's home page to allow people to get a glimpse of what to expect from the business.
